The National Science Foundation has announced an open competition for $400,000 in program funds for a new Land-Margin Ecosystem Research (LMER) project. Four projects are funded currently.

Dr. Patricia Werner, former director and senior principal research scientist of the Commonwealth of Science and Industrial Research Organization’s (CSIRO) Tropical Ecosystems Research Center in Australia, is the new Division Director for Biotic Systems and Resources (BSR) at the National Science Foundation (NSF) in Washington, D.C.

Dr. James L Edwards, Program Director of NSF’s Biological Research Resources Program, Division of Biotic Systems and Resources (BSR), was named Acting Division Director while the national search for Dr. Brooks’ replacement is being conducted.

The issue of “scaling up” is particularly appropriate in the LTER context at this time. The total number of projects has been increased again; there are now 17.
