The US International Long Term Ecological Research (ILTER) Committee organized two symposia at the recent 2013 INTECOL Meeting in London.  The goals of the symposia were to highlight long-term site-based research around the globe, particularly efforts involving comparative studies across more than one country, and also to bring ILTER scientists together to inspire future collaborative work.

Following on the heels of the 98th annual meeting of the Ecological Society of America, the International Association for Ecology met in conjunction with the British Ecological Society's centennial celebration in London and the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network was well represented in the “programme.”

Scientists from the Mexico and U.S. Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) networks are engaged in an effort to establish a research platform to better understand water resource issues at LTER sites in these two countries. As part of this effort, 15 scientists and students from each network attended a workshop held at the Chamela Field Station, Jalisco, Mexico in October 2012 to discuss issues of local water sustainability in a socio-ecological context.

The International Long Term Ecological Research (ILTER) Network, of which the US LTER is a founder, plans to establish an Information Management System (IMS) to facilitate data exchange across all 40 member networks. To address some of the multilingual issues that will arise, a workshop entitled “Semantic Approaches to Discovery of Multilingual ILTER Data” was held June 19-23 at the East China Normal University in Shanghai, China. The workshop brought together information managers from China, Israel, UK, Korea, Taiwan, Japan, and the US, which was represented by Kristin Vanderbilt (SEV), John Porter (AND), Margaret O’Brien (SBC), and Don Henshaw (AND).

Kansas State University recently hosted an international symposium entitled “Grasslands in a Global Context" to celebrate two important milestones: 40 years since the establishment of the Konza Prairie Biological Station (KPBS) and 30 years since the Konza Prairie (KNZ) Long-Term Ecological Research (LTER) program was launched.
