Understanding the linkages between historical and contemporary disturbances, extreme environmental gradients, and rapidly changing social systems will help determine historical, current, and future land-use patterns, and help to quantify and predict the resulting impacts on terrestrial and aquatic biodiversity and ecosystem function.
