At the Shapotou Desert Experimental and Research Station

At the Shapotou Desert Experimental and Research Station, the edge of a sandy expanse was lined with a grid of small twigs that covered an extensive area.

This grid served to stabilize the sand and help retain organic matter (which would, in turn, aid in the retention of water as well).

There were definite areas where this had led to a self-sustaining association of plants.
