A new study by the U. S. Geological Survey (USGS) reports that snow in the Colorado mountains is melting significantly earlier in the year than in the 1970s and that the changes appear to be related to recent climate trends.
The study, which appears in the latest issue of the Journal of Climate, examined recent trends in snowmelt and streamflow timing in Colorado from 1978-2007 using climate data from the Niwot Ridge Long Term Ecological Research site, as well as other non-LTER sources.
