The National Science Foundation (NSF) has just published an online report called Discoveries in the Critical Zone (CZO): Where Life Meets Rock, which details the important role Critical Zone Observatories, several of which are members of the Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Network, are playing in trying to understand how the “critical zone” area between the tree canopy and the base of weathered rock responds to change in climate and land use.
