With the formation of an LTER Student Committee, students will begin to take a more active role in the LTER Network
A LTER Student Committee has been formed by the LTER Coordinating Committee to increase graduate student involvement in the LTER Network.
Membership of the Committee includes the following graduate students, who are presently working at LTER sites: Win Everham (Luquillo), Janet Fischer (Northern Temperate Lakes), Anne Hartley (Jornada), and Steve Wondzell (Andrews). The Committee’s immediate goals are to:
- Encourage graduate student participation in the All Scientists Meeting
- Facilitate interaction among students, LTER principal investigators, and collaborators at the meeting, and
- Create opportunities for cross-site comparisons involving students
To meet the above goals, the LTER Student Committee is planning several activities at the 1993 LTER All Scientists Meeting in Estes Park, Colorado, including:
- A social event on Saturday afternoon, September 18 for all graduate students attending the meeting (time and location to be announced)
- Hosted lunch discussions on specific topics, to involve one or two senior LTER scientists and two to four students per table, lunch Sunday, September 19.
- A workshop Monday evening, September 20, to discuss cross-site comparisons and graduate student involvement in the LTER Program Students attending the All Scientists Meeting are encouraged to notify the Student Committee prior to the Meeting of their research interests to facilitate the planning of topic lunches. Participants should plan to arrive at the YMCA of the Rockies in Estes Park early in the afternoon, Saturday, September 18. Other scientists attending the Meeting who would like to attend a topic lunch are also encouraged to notify the Committee in advance and suggest topics for discussion.
