In its first 18 months of operation, the Sustainable Biosphere Initiative (SBI) Project Office, established by the Ecological Society of America (ESA), has initiated programs and projects designed to foster ecological research and facilitate constructive interaction between the scientific community, government agencies, resource managers, non-governmental organizations, industry and others.

Recent activities include:

  • Established a cooperative agreement with the Environmental Protection Agency’s Global Climate Change Impacts on Habitat Program
  • Signed Memoranda of Understanding with the Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management to contribute scientific input into an ecosystem management approach to managing public land
  • Formed a working group of 13 federal agencies to facilitate their interaction with the scientific community for integrating science into policy decisions
  • Planned a workshop to bring EPA Environmental Monitoring and Protection Program and LTER personnel and independent researchers
  • Convened an Ecosystem Management Roundtable co-sponsored by the ESA, Association of Ecosystem Research Centers, and the Department of Interior to explore mechanisms together to explore mutual research interests
  • Facilitated development of the Sustainable Biosphere Project, an international, interdisciplinary project sponsored by the Scientific Committee on Problems of the Environment to help identify and implement resource policies and practices required to achieve a sustainable biosphere
