One of three existing NSF-supported research stations in the Antarctic will be selected by the Division of Polar Programs in collaboration with Biotic Systems and Resources for long-term ecological research funds.
The stations, one a dry valley site set up to study global climatic change and the other two, oceanographic sites involved in seal population studies, are competing for $500,000 over three years, with a commitment from Polar Programs for at least 10 years. The program selected would also be eligible for another $500,000 in operational support. In addition, Polar Programs’ long-range plan includes the possibility of more Antarctic sites in the future.
The LTER Advisory Panel met in early March to review the proposals and, should the Panel recommend a project, research activity will begin this fiscal year. The earliest possible start date would be September 1990.
