Amy H. Rinehart has been appointed Series Editor for the Long Term Ecological Network (LTER) Schoolyard Book Series through the National Science Foundation (NSF). The position is based at the International Artic and Alpine Research (INSTAAR) headquarters at the University of Colorado-Boulder.

A last-minute funding availability allowed the Education Committee to assemble for its annual meeting August 22-24, 2013, at Cedar Creek (CDR) Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) site in Minnesota. Thirteen site representatives and two graduate student members traveled to the Land ‘O Lakes for a weekend of sub-committee reports, brainstorming and goal-setting, mixed with hikes, bonfires and al fresco dining on the edge of the prairie. In addition to setting achievable goals for the upcoming year, members acknowledged Steven McGee for his two terms as co- chair of the Education Committee.

The long-awaited Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) Education Digital Library has gone live.  The work of education coordinators across the Network, Marshall White at the LTER Network Office, and the digital library working group led by Beth Simmons, the library was unveiled on September 23.  We will make a network-wide announcement along with the URL for the site soon. It’s going to be great….don’t miss it!

Several coastal Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites have teamed up to offer an online graduate course, “Linking biology and geomorphology in coastal wetlands (and other habitats)”. Several Long Term Ecological Research (LTER) sites have been rather successful in attracting and engaging culturally diverse students, especially among K-12 audiences and, to a lesser degree, undergraduate students. However, there is general consensus that there is no current structure within the Network to specifically expand diversity of student participation in the wider LTER community. This was one of the issues raised at an Ad-Hoc Working Group session held during the 2012 LTER All Scientists Meeting (ASM) in Estes Park, Colorado.
